Welcome to First Photons — here's the deal
There’s a moment most mornings, maybe twenty minutes before the sun clears the horizon, when the first light hits the sensor and the whole frame just… resolves.
The noise drops away. The shadows find their edges. What was a flat grey plane of a landscape becomes a photograph.
Those are the first photons. The earliest, cleanest light of the day — and, if you want to get technical about it, the first light to ever strike the sensor and become an image. That’s the whole idea of this newsletter, so I named it after them.
I’m Kevin. I live on the north coast of Jamaica, in Portland, and I photograph the landscapes and coastline that most people fly over on the way to a resort. These aren’t places I travel to — they’re my early mornings. First Photons is where I share how I plan a shoot, how I practise, how I edit, and what it actually takes to build a full-time income from landscape photography right here in Jamaica.
No gatekeeping. Real numbers. The good frames and the throwaways.
If you’re here, you’re probably one of three people:
You shoot for love, and you want to get sharper — better technique, better edits, fewer “almost” frames.
You’re planning to travel and want to know where the light is good and how to come home with photos that make the trip worth it.

That last one needs a little more explanation, because it’s what makes this newsletter different from every other photography newsletter you’ve subscribed to…
A few honest questions, answered.
Is it actually free?
Yes. Always will be. I make money from Sessions and Presets, not from the letter. The letter exists so the right people can find me before they decide whether to work with me — and so the wrong ones don't need to.
How long is each issue?
Five minutes to read, max. Four short sections. Long enough to be useful, short enough to actually read on a Tuesday morning.
What if I'm not in Jamaica?
Most readers aren't. The technique and editing threads apply anywhere you're shooting landscapes. The Jamaica location notes are bonus — most people read them like a travel section, and some end up booking a trip.
Will you spam me or sell my email?
No and no. One letter on Tuesdays. Maybe one extra email a quarter if there's something genuinely worth saying — a new Preset pack, a Session opening. That's the entire contract.
